Is There Enough Guidance In Our Schools
Most parents presume that faculties are providing the required varsity and career planning guidance to their children. But discoveries gleaned from over 10 years of research studies reveal that students are not getting the help they have to make good calls about life after high school .
38 mins a year is the approximate period of time the average student receives from a school counselor on university advising. This statistic is founded upon state averages of student-to-counselor proportions and counselor time allocation research according to 2005 report titled'Counseling and college analysis in America's High Schools' by Dr. Patricia McDonough.
This naturally is a median. While the amount of time varies widely by college and by student, interviews with elders exhibit that it is a large concern. Despite the best of intentions, the level of personalized steerage provided is not uniformly distributed to all students.
'My child is a solid student. He isn't at the top of his class, but he isn't fighting either. The college clearly pays the most attention to the scholars that standout... Either at the top, or the bottom.
Not Enough Counselors... Too Many Demands
McDonough's report, the american school advisor association ( ASCA ) recommends one advisor for each hundred scholars, or a 100:1 ratio. The actual student-to-counselor ratio across the nation's's schools is estimated to be 315:1. That's 3 times the counseled level according to the national Center for tutorial statistics ( NCES ).
In some states,eg California, Minnesota, Arizona and Utah, the average is well over 500:1
Where does this leave college and career planning services? They are considered'nice to haves' in many colleges because the time and resources aren't there to support them.
The average student-to-counselor proportion in private colleges is gauged to be 241:1 according to the nation's Center for academic statistical data. While this ratio is better then the general public college ratio of 315:1, it's still over 2 times the ASCA's recommendation of 100:1.
Even private schools Long Island are affected.

Nursery School Versus Home Schooling
There are many acceptable reasons why parent may decide to get rid of their youngsters from public colleges and begin home schooling them. Many thousands of parents across America have come to the conclusion that public colleges simply cannot guarantee their children's safety ; that public college overcrowding is depriving their children of the individual attention they need from their teachers ; and therefore the presence from bullies and uncontrollable kids in public faculties is to distracting for their children.
While there are lots of negatives in the public college experience which excuse the decision to start home schooling a kid, there is also one very big positive. Research studies have shown that home schooled children learn better than those that remain in public colleges, and even better than kids in pricey personal colleges. The truth about home schooling is that the research signifies that for most youngsters, being removed from public school for home schooling was the best call their parents could have made. Home Schooling Success Stories
There are, of course, the individual stories which reflect glory on the unvarnished truth about home schooling : the 2007 winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee was thirteen-year-old Evan O'Dorney. Due to is flexible home schooling schedule, his mum was able to spend 2 hours training him with his spelling every day for one or two weeks before the competition.
The truth about home schooling is that, unlike public schooling, it doesn't have artificial standards to which each kid must conform before being permitted to advance to the subsequent grade. Home schooling permits youngsters to progress at different rates in each subject, so second-grader Mary might be reading at a sixth-grade level while she's still trying to master second-grade mathematics.
The USDE Agrees
The US office of Education itself has supported the conclusions of studies which point to that by the end of eighth grade, home schooled children are performing an average of four grades ahead of their public college opposite numbers. Whether the home schools are that far better, or the general public colleges are that worse, may not be clear, but the results are.
Perhaps after reading this, you are looking for a pre school center on Long Island.
Home schooling will be a learning experience for mothers and fathers as well as children and in the early going can be a worry for mothers and fathers who have not tried formal teaching before. So the support of other home schooling elders can be very useful, and another truth about home schooling is that the elders engaged in it are a few of the most supportive folks one is probably going to meet.

Long Island Private School Versus Homje Schooling
Many parents excited to begin home schooling their kids have though long and hard about the advantages home schooling will bring to their youngsters. But unfortunately they regularly fail to consider the home schooling drawbacks which can also play a large part in their kids's academic and social development.
While parents may love the concept of permitting their youngsters to learn at their own rate without being pressured to keep up or labeled'dummies' if they need to spend some more time than the majority of their classmates in mastering a subject, one of the home schooling disadvantages which they won't be factoring into their home schooling decision is whether their talents as teachers are up to helping their youngsters learn hard material.
One of the most important home schooling downsides is a parent will be fully accountable for coming up with their children's schedule, curriculum, and the moral and social values to be instilled in them as part of their schooling. That sort of responsibility will extend well past the hours in which a parent and children are actively engaged in home school.
A home schooling parent will have to spend a little time before and after class researching and organizing a curriculum which meets the home schooling standards in their school district, and also plan the class time activities which may make the material engaging for the youngsters.
If a tutor is involved, the parents might be nervous about how well the youngsters are progressing in their absence.
One private school on Long Island knows this disadvantage only too well.
Home schooling downsides also extend into the social area. A college classroom is not simply a place where kids advance academically ; it is their introduction to learning social interaction skills. Learning to engage with youngsters aside from their siblings and sisters is critical for every child, because almost the whole world is unrelated to them.
A home schooled kid may not get a chance to develop that degree of tolerance.
Certainly, home schooling has itsw benefits. But so too does the classic school format. And should that become a choice, for a wonderful private school Long Island, bring your best questions.
